Our goal at OneSignal has always been to provide both an amazing free product for companies to get started alongside affordable paid features for those who desire more advanced capabilities.

As OneSignal’s capabilities have greatly improved over the past year, we’re putting in place a couple of limits announced a few quarters ago on some of what we currently offer for free. These limits will impact less than 5% of our active users and are focused on ensuring that people using advanced functionality and putting the greatest load on our systems are contributing more equitably.

These limits ensure that we are able to provide world-class service, continue to release amazing free and paid features, and send more than 5 billion notifications per day on behalf of all of our users.

We’ll apply these limits to free plan users starting December 1, 2019:

  • Up to 6 Segments: OneSignal’s Free tier will support up to 6 Segments for users with more than 30,000 subscribers. Additional Segments may be created by upgrading to a Paid plan. Free users with more than 6 Segments will only be able to use 6 of them -- the others will be paused. You can choose which ones you want to unpause.
  • Up to 3 Automated Messages: OneSignal’s Free tier will support up to 3 Automated Messages for users with more than 30,000 subscribers. Additional Automated Messages may be created by upgrading to a Paid plan. Free users with more than 3 Automated Messages will only be able to have three active.
  • Up to 10 Data Tags per device: OneSignal’s Free tier will support up to 10 Data Tags per device. This limitation applies to all Free users, regardless of subscriber count. Adding more than 10 Data Tags per device may be done by upgrading to a Paid plan. API calls which would result in more than 10 data tags on a device will return an error starting December 1st.

Free accounts that exceed these limits will still be able to use Segments, Automated Messages, and Data Tags, but will be subject to the limitations described above.

A small percentage of our users represent the vast majority of our costs and we’ve tried to tailor these limits to impact only a tiny subset of our users who are disproportionately costly to serve.

Upgrading to our starter or pro plans allows you to continue using OneSignal without any of these limits, as well as enables powerful outcome, in-app messaging, and data export functionality.

Thanks for being part of the OneSignal community. As always, we’re here for you and happy to answer any questions you may have.
