Annual Reminder: Build Your Holiday Journey While It's Still Boring

The holiday lift doesn't announce itself on Black Friday. According to OneSignal's own 2025 retail data, early holiday engagement climbs by nearly two-thirds before Black Friday and Cyber Monday even arrive, and that climb starts in August.

These are the two months most teams hand over for free. Below is the setup work that can't be rushed no matter when you start, two low-stakes tests worth running right now, and how much of the actual build you can hand off before any of it matters.

Why everyone waits anyway

A few things about holiday-scale sending take real calendar time, no matter how fast your team moves:

  • SMS sender registration (10DLC or toll-free verification) can take carriers one to four weeks to approve.
  • RCS sender verification runs through a similar carrier review queue, not something you can push through same-day.
  • A sending domain needs weeks of real volume behind it to build the reputation that keeps holiday-sized sends out of spam folders.
  • A/B tests on send time and creative need a few real cycles to mean anything. Testing during the actual rush just burns your best week on an experiment instead of a proven play.

While everyone else is still warming up a domain nobody's sent real volume through yet, you're already tightening the segments that'll matter most in six weeks.

By the time real holiday traffic shows up, competitors are just getting their infrastructure live. You've already had weeks to find out what will actually convert, instead of guessing under pressure.

What "build it now" actually means

Split your work into two separate moments that don't have to happen at the same time:

  • Design it now, while nothing's on fire and you can actually think.
  • Activate it later, the moment your own data says the season has started, not the moment your calendar says it should have.

Design work you can do today, in a single sitting, without a single Q4 metric in hand:

  • Draft the segments: last year's holiday purchasers, high-intent browsers who didn't convert, your highest-value at-risk customers, and anyone who opted in but has gone quiet since. Sketch the Journey skeleton: an early-access or preview touch, a mid-window reminder, a last-chance push timed to actual urgency instead of a guess, and a post-holiday win-back for the people who bought once and disappeared.
  • Write rough copy for each step now, in whatever voice you'll actually use, so November-you isn't drafting push copy at 6pm the night before a send.
  • Set the whole thing to sit in draft, paused, fully built, waiting on a trigger instead of a launch date.

A couple extra notes on testing…

One test worth running now: send a small, ordinary message to last year's holiday-purchaser segment and see who's actually still there. Lists decay quietly over a year. Finding out in November that a third of your highest-value segment bounces or never opens is more of an “oh well” blindspot than data point you can act on. And our data shows that the most disastrous churn rates out there are caused largely in part by the “oh well” mentality. Don’t fall into the trap!

There's another one sitting in the same historical data, just a different question: pull your unsubscribe and opt-out rates against your actual send frequency during that stretch. That tells you where your real audience's tolerance sat under real holiday conditions, no manufactured test required, no risk to anyone.

Draft it in an afternoon, not a quarter

Not only can we prepare earlier, but we can now accomplish many of these tasks much quicker.

Building four to six segments and a multi-step Journey from a blank canvas, can genuinely turn into a multi-day project (which is exactly why it keeps getting pushed to "when there's more time.")

OneSignal AI can build that same structure from a plain-language brief in a fraction of that time (describe the audience and the flow you want, and get a working draft of the segments and journey steps to react to and refine), and the OneSignal MCP Server lets you keep adjusting it conversationally as you tighten the plan, without rebuilding it from scratch every time something changes. You still make every real decision about what this journey does. What disappears is the excuse that building it takes too long, because that part's no longer on you!

Holiday prep is a great excuse to stop building this manually for good

Ask OneSignal AI to build the segment instead of clicking through filters: "Everyone who purchased between November 15 and December 25 last year." Get the segment logic in seconds, ready for you to check and adjust, instead of assembling it field by field.

Ask it to draft the whole journey skeleton at once: "A four-step holiday Journey: an early-access push, a reminder three days before the sale ends, a last-chance push the day it ends, and a win-back email two weeks later for anyone who bought once and didn't come back." You get a working draft to react to, not that blank canvas we mentioned earlier.

Ask it the question you'd otherwise dig a report out for: "What was our unsubscribe rate by send frequency last November?" instead of exporting data and building a pivot table to find out.

If you're already working in Claude or ChatGPT, the OneSignal MCP Server lets you make the actual change from there. Tell it to move the last-chance push to six hours before the sale ends, and it proposes the change and waits on your confirmation before it touches a single real user.

The decisions still sit with you, what the segments should be, what the Journey should say. What changes is how long it takes to turn those decisions into a working build: minutes instead of an afternoon, and definitely instead of a week you don't have in November.

The easiest deadline you'll ever actually beat

None of this needs a Q4 budget meeting or anyone's permission, just an afternoon, a rough plan, and a decision to stop treating September like it doesn't count. Draft the segments, sketch the Journey, let OneSignal AI do the typing, and leave the whole thing sitting there, built and ready, so the only thing left to do when the season actually starts is watch it run.
